When to Replace Your Water Heater (Not Just Patch It)
Seven signs your Columbus water heater needs replacement, not another repair. Learn about lifespan and replacement guidance.

Repair vs. replace, the honest test
Here's the general rule: if your water heater is less than 8 years old and only a single part has failed (like a thermocouple, heating element, or relief valve), a repair makes sense. However, if the unit is 10 years or older, leaking directly from the tank, or you're constantly calling for service, it's time for a new one. Trying to fix an old, failing tank is just throwing money away.
Sign 1: Age 10+ years
Locate the serial number on your water heater's data plate. Most manufacturers include the year of production in the first few digits. If your unit is over 10 years old in Columbus, its operational life is likely nearing an end. Columbus's moderately hard water, along with older cast iron service lines in areas like German Village or Clintonville, means tanks rarely last beyond 12 years.
Sign 2: Water at the base
If you see water accumulating around the base of your water heater, it means the tank walls have corroded and failed. This is not repairable. You must replace the unit immediately to prevent significant water damage to your home, especially in basements common in Dublin or Westerville.
Sign 3: Rust-tinted hot water
When only your hot water appears brown or rusty, it indicates that the inside of your tank is corroding. If your cold water runs clear but your hot water is discolored, it's a clear sign for replacement. The internal lining is compromised.
Sign 4: Repeated repairs
Have you had three or more service calls within a two-year period, especially on a unit older than 8 years? You are basically paying for a new water heater through constant repairs. It's more cost-effective to invest in a replacement now rather than continuing to patch an aging system.
Sign 5: Hot water runs out fast
If a typical shower that used to provide ample hot water now turns cold quickly, the effective capacity of your tank has likely decreased due to sediment buildup. A professional flush might restore some capacity. If not, or if the problem quickly returns, it's time to consider a replacement. This is common in homes with older plumbing in areas like Olde Towne East.
